Morning Zazen

Every Weekday 7am Pacific / 9am Central Online

Without the early morning bells and a community moving toward the zendo in the dawn light, creating a steady mediation practice is a challenge. According to the statisticians, any attempt we make at adding a new activity to our daily routine has a less than 50% chance of succeeding after 30 days, however when you commit yourself to doing that activity with others, the odds jump to 85%. And after 90 days, odds are that this will become a habit and part of your life, even when it’s a solo activity.

We warmly invite you to join Pop Up Zendo in daily silent meditation, designed to get you on the cushion and deeper into your days in less than 30 minutes. Sitting together on zoom, we will focus on creating, energizing and refining our mediation practice.

This meditation period will be silent, so as to dovetail into our days and is open to all, whether you are participating in the practice period or working on your own practice. It is also a time when our morning Zazen can become an inspiration to others and help them grow. Together we are one monk.

Zazen will begin each morning Monday through Friday each week at 7:30 am in San Francisco, 8:30 am Taos, and 9:30 am in Austin. All are welcome.

“The more you sense the rareness and value of your own life, the more you realize that how you use it, how you manifest it, is all your responsibility. We face such a big task, so naturally we sit down for a while. We sit to make life meaningful.”

— Kobun

POP UP ZENDO FORMS

  1. Try to arrive a few minutes early to allow time to settle into your seat.

  2. This is a silent meditation and bowing or smiling can express ourselves better than words.

  3. While Zen has a particular posture, seated upright and facing the wall, please do feel free to sit in the posture that you are most comfortable in. We are here to support your practice as it fits best into your life, not any ideals.

  4. Yes, we understand that the time will find you in the midst of your life. Absolutely, we welcome you just as you are, at work, in a car, or hiding from interruption in a place we never imagined.

  5. Feel free to adapt the technology we are using to your practice.

  6. Feel free to move as you need. We might suggest that if you need to move, you could count 20 breaths before making the move. This helps to keep ‘monkey mind’ from chattering from tree to tree in our heads over every little thing.

  7. Three Bells will ring on the hour to begin meditaion.

  8. This is a 25 minute sit, designed to allow you to contain, arrive, meditation, and exit all inside a 30 minute block of time.

  9. A small bow can be an inspiring practice but is not at all necessary.

  10. If questions or ideas arise, simply wait until the room the room clears and speak to the teacher. Pop Up Zendo Inos make it a point to leave the room last. Reach out anytime via email, text or phone if you need help or need some instruction. We will be happy to schedule a one on one meeting with practice leader if you might find that helpful.
